Today, the usage of social networks has become
familiar to most of us and is more likely to play an important role in
communication nowadays. The ability to connect people from all the world
through texts, pictures and clips is remarkable to different majors and
education is not by any means different. According to Boyd and Heer (2006)
these networks are strong to cause changes of how people interact with each other.
It brings people no matter where they are together and ties their bonds. As
learners are in need of adapting to the shifts that occur in technology, the
way users deal with it affects how they learn by it and what behavior they
carry on. According to Baruah (2012) that establishing understanding and
recognition to students attitude using social networks for English learning can
develop using it in a way to improve students language learning skills.

The importance of this study is to present the
influence of social media on the attitudes of English major students at the
Bahrain’s Teachers College. According to Azjen and Fishbein (1980) The source
of one’s behavior is their beliefs in something, students attitude is
influenced by their views, positive or negative, regarding their intentions in
performing or not. AlShoaibi and Shukri (2017) also indicate that the attitudes
of one’s gender differs where males agree on using social networking sites
inside and outside the classroom unlike females.  Therefore, the effectiveness of social media
can be contributed to learning and specifically language learning in addition
to several other factors such as beliefs, gender and experience.

Various studies reported that the majority of
people enjoy using social media to communicate with others on both their career
level and everyday lives, as Baruah (2012) found that these interactions can be
simply by looking back at what people have commented on their pages and it can
go on to adding to one’s self such as acquiring skills through going to
workshops and so. This way, people can be updated to what is new today and can
apply their knowledge to different areas including teaching and learning.

Another thing he mentioned in the study was
that using social media in the classroom enables the students to work together
under specific groups in learning where each individual can be helped to gain their
own domination and become aware of the areas they are working on. Later on,
these individuals can have an impact on these areas.

Here we can view these individuals as learners attempting
to develop their learning through using social networking sites in which Cabero
(2009) describes as coming up with their own subject matter and practices. Through
helping students stay focused to their learning and supported, researchers Coll,
Mauri, & Onrubia (2008) found that it can encourage them to learn
independently. According to Esteven (2009) that this can reinforce their work together
as groups and support them thinking creatively.

Lately, these social networking sites were such
a hit that a shift was made to the information and communication technology world. Research
by Espuny,
Gonzalez, Lleixà, and Gisbert (2011) states a massive change was made in recent
years in the way people were communicating and exchanging information.

Regardless of the difference in these areas,
LeNoue et al. (2011) found that the lack of experience some students have can
affect them being unaccepting to the new technology and social networks where
they believe of their poor skills in using technology. Nevertheless, another
study by Farhat and Kazim (2011, p. 604) that due to the low experience these
learners have, they might develop a negative reaction towards technology and
social networks. A lot can be done in this case but it is preferred by the
authors to provide students with the needed devices and social networking sites
to raise their learning for better behavior towards technology.  

According to Azjen and Fishbein (1980) The

attitude towards learning through social networks that can eventually not help
them acquire the targeted learning goals that teachers have set. It is
important to help learners develop a reaction that will foster their learning
of English and make it enjoyable.

As an important role is given to technology in
schools now, Scalise (2016) found that it became highly important to use it and
give students the chances to experience using it correctly while staying
focused on their learning.

However, AlShoaibi and Shukri (2017) found that
female students were on a disagreement on using it inside and outside the
classroom where male students agreed on using it even beyond the classroom. As
a study by Kayaoglu (2012) and Shashaani (1994) found this to be because of
their low level of confidence and lack of experience compared to male learners.
Leading the users, in this case males to acquire skills and positive behaviors towards
technology and social networks according to Thomas & Brown (2011) rather
than female learners. It also limits the non-users of language training and
gives its users a bigger opportunity for going after the 21st
century skills.

The aim behind this paper is to investigate on
how using social network sites has an impact on students learning English as a
second language at Bahrain Teachers College and find out more about the factors
that influence student usage of social networks in learning English.
