Nowadays the
parental leave is very important  for an
employee to balance the demands of the workplace with the needs of families.
Also, it successfully helps in bridging the gap between family and work and
secures the right for both men and women to get paid/ unpaid leave and
assistance while dealing with family related circumstances.  Because once a child is born it become the
assist for the nation where they born as they are called as the future of the
country. In my opinion the future of the country is entirely based on the
younger generation so that the parental leave is very important and it is the
right for the every women of all nation to have a leave during this period.
Mothers are the front line child care providers and therefore, if they are
given maternity leave, they can do their job better.

Today in
India, the  most of the homes the mother
salary is very important to support the family. So, if the mother does not get
a paid maternity leave then she has to go back to the job earlier and this
would affects the child care. The other thing,
a woman has to go with very stressful time physically, emotionally as
well as the financially. Therefore if woman are allowed for the paid maternity
leaves so that  they can look after their
health as well as the child.

Effects of
parental leave:-

The
effects of parental leave are improvements in prenatal and postnatal care,
including a decrease in infant mortality. Infant mortality refers to deaths of
young children, typically those less than one year of age. Parental presence
during the early years constitutes a significant investment in child
development. Parental leave is not just good for parents, but also for kids. It
was found that parents who take parental leave are more likely to be involved
in child care activities, and that their kids do better on some cognitive
ability tests.

Also,
the effects of parental leave on the labor market include an increase in
employment, changes in wages, and reduce the fluctuations in the rate of
employees returning to work.

Maternity leave
and its effects:

The
term maternity leave define as period of absence from work granted to a mother
before and after the birth of her child.

The
law will apply to all establishments employing 10 or more people and the
entitlement will be for the first two children. For the third child, the
entitlement will be 12 weeks.

With
this, India becomes the country with the third highest maternity leave. Canada
and Norway grant 50 weeks and 44 weeks respectively as paid maternity leave.

Paternity leave
and its effects:

In
India, there is no provision on paternity leave in Indian labour law for
private sector workers. The civil servants  (Central Government) however are entitled to
paternity leave. A male civil servant (including an apprentice, probationer)
with less than two surviving children, may be granted Paternity Leave  for
a period of 15 days before or up to six months from the date of delivery of the
child. If paternity leave is not taken within 6 months of the birth of child,
it is treated as lapsed. Workers on paternity leave are paid their leave
salary equal to the pay drawn immediately before proceeding on leave. The
paternity Leave may be combined with leave of any other kind. The paternity
leave cannot be debited against the leave account. Paternity Leave cannot normally
be refused under any circumstances. Similar provisions are applicable on the
adoption of a child under the age of one year.

Effects on
health:-

Parental
leave have impact on infant health as well. It was found that when infants bond
and have their needs met quickly by caregivers (mothers, fathers, etc.) they
will become confident and be prepared to have healthy relationships throughout
their life.

This
was also observed that there is improvement in the mental health of mothers
when they are able to return to work later which is a result of parental leave.
Longer leave (leave over 10 weeks) was associated with decreased severity of
depression. This reduction was, on average, between 5% and 10%.

Effects on
economy:-

Paid
family leave tends to lead to a higher employee retention rate and higher
incomes for families. Would like to add that moderate levels of parental leave
can encourage mothers to reenter the work force after having children,
promoting national economic development.

Parental laws in
India:-

i)
Maternity leave available to the working women to be increased from 12 weeks to
26 weeks for the first two children.

(ii) Maternity leave for children beyond the first two will continue to be 12
weeks.

(iii) Maternity leave of 12 weeks to be available to mothers adopting a child
below the age of three months as well as to the “commissioning mothers”. The
commissioning mother has been defined as biological mother who uses her egg to
create an embryo planted in any other woman.

(iv) Every establishment with more than 50 employees to provide for crèche
facilities for working mothers and such mothers will be permitted to make four
visits during working hours to look after and feed the child in the
crèche.

(v) The employer may permit a woman to work from home if it is possible to do
so.

(vi) Every establishment will be required to make these benefits available to
the women from the time of her appointment.

In
the nutshell, I would like to say that for the Children do better in term of
their cognitive and socio emotional development is only possible when parents
can stay home in the first year of life.
