Plato’s Phaedrus
is a dialogue form in which expresses Plato’s knowledge of the nature and
purpose of philosophy. This analysis will focus on the conversation between Phaedrus
and Socrates, as this discussion is triggered by speech that was written regarding
the concept of love. Through out this dialogue, Socrates presents multiple
speeches, without writing anything down. This results in what we forget in
active reading, it is lived experience of existing and being in the world. We
forget that writing somehow prevents us from knowing what we already know and
seduces us into thinking something that otherwise would have been known as
false. Writing often gives us the false sense of truth, not about what is
handed down, but what is present before us. The major argument being conducted
in this analysis is the subject of rhetoric and to determine whether or not it
is necessary for acquiring knowledge, or if it is considered “art” and be worth
of study. In terms of sections and passages, the passage from 257c to 279c is
what will be the main focus, the study of rhetoric.

 

Within this passage of the Phaedrus the major concern is the power of rhetoric and the
importance of speech. Lysias’s main goal is to be persuasive with the validity
of his argument of love, however, to also convince them of rhetoric, the
combination of persuasive speech and compositional techniques. Speech within
this text provides significance to the attempt of seduction, the skillful
language created to persuade audiences utmost desires. Socrates treats rhetoric
in this dialogue by criticizing the concept of the persuasive language used in
the essence of love. Socrates emphasizes the manipulation used to sway the
listeners and raises that there are ethical concerns founded within this
problem where the techniques of rhetoric used are inadequate representations of
reality, failing to convey the real truth
