Freezing point depression is the process of adding a nonvolatile solute to a solvent to decrease the freezing point of the solvent.  Freezing point depression can be used frequently in everyday life.  Putting salt on ice can melt ice on roads, but that’s not all.  Freezing point depression is also used in car engine radiators and to make ice cream.Putting salt  in water or on ice lowers water’s freezing point.    Water freezes at 32 degrees fahrenheit.  When salt is mixed with water it disrupts the rate at which molecules are present at the crossing point between solid and liquid.   In other terms, salt prevents water molecules from coming back to the solid state, and decreases the freezing point.   Freezing point depression means that the salt will melt ice and make the roads, sidewalks, etc safer.  However the salt used for this is extremely corrosive to many things.   You can use less effective calcium or brine to melt ice and be less damaging to cars and the environment.  But many people still use the salt.  Car engines heat up when they are being used.   If the engine overheats the car can break down.  Cars have a radiator which is used for cooling the engine.  A radiator is near the engine in a car.  It absorbs the heat produced from the engine by circulating coolant around it.  Water alone can be the coolant,  but when it gets cold outside and temperatures drop below 32 degrees fahrenheit the water will freeze.   Antifreeze is the coolant that is usually used in car radiators.  Antifreeze contains water and Ethylene Glycol which causes freezing point depression.  Ethylene Glycol causes freezing point depression because it is a nonvolatile solute.  It freezes at  about -34 degrees fahrenheit.  That means it has to be much colder outside for your engine to stop working,   Freezing point depression is also used to make ice cream.   To make ice cream without a freezer, you need a way to transfer heat out of the ice cream mix.  Water is more effective at doing this than ice.  To melt the ice to make ice cream you take ice from a freezer and at certain points add rock salt to it.  This causes the ice to melt at a lower temperature and turns it into water.  The temperature of the water is lower than the normal freezing point. That means the salt is preventing the water from freezing even though the water is lower than what it would normally freeze at if it did not have a nonvolatile solute in it.   That way you can have an efficient heat transfer.     When making ice cream,  salt  is used because it prevents ice cream from completely freezing, keeping it in a semi-solid state.     Freezing point depression is a chemical reaction.  This reaction changes the freezing point of a solvent.  Which can change the state of matter.  There are many different ways this chemical reaction can be used in everyday life.
