Food for a food scientist (AGCAS editors, 2016). These

Food science is the scientific study
of raw food materials and how they behave during formulation, processing,
packaging, storage, and evaluation as consumer food products. It is also a
discipline under which physical sciences, biology, and engineering are used in
the studying of the nature of foods, causes of food deterioration and food
processing principles. Food scientists study the physical, chemical and
microbiological composition of food. The research and the development of food
technology have led to safe and nutritious foods production. A food scientist
has to ensure food products are safely produced and are of the best quality for
human consumption. Food science is usually applied in the manufacturing food
products preservation. (Singh, 2018)

            There are many possible career
opportunities for a food scientist (AGCAS editors, 2016). These include food
technologist, nutritional therapist, regulatory affairs officer, quality
manager, technical brewer, product/process development scientist, scientific
laboratory technician, a toxicologist, product developer who develops processes
and formulations to deliver according to the expectation of consumers and many
more (Institute of Food Technologists, 2016 pg. 4).

The Interaction between Food
Scientists and Psychologists

            Behavioral and cognitive
neuroscience studies lead to the research in areas like toxicology, neural,
behavioral and development pharmacology, food intake and body weight
regulation, substance use and abuse (Clas, 2008).
Therefore, they can work hand in hand with food scientists in various fields.
For example, a food scientist who is involved in developing food recipes and
drink products, manufacturing processes can work on already existing
ingredients or newly-discovered ingredients to come up with new concepts and
recipes (AGCAS editors, 2016).         The
food scientists modify foods to produce products like ready meals and fat-free
items. They match and evaluate competitive synthetic and natural colors while
formulating mixtures of colors with certified colorants and natural colorants (Institute
of Food Technologists,
2016 pg. 3). These food scientists can work with the psychologists
by producing same products of different quality or made by different
ingredients. The produces can then be given to somebody at given intervals as
one’s behaviors are being monitored by a psychologist. By so doing the food
scientist and the psychologist will come up with the best and safe product to
be produced.

            Scientific laboratory technicians
are involved in different laboratory-based experiments within physical,
chemical, biological and life sciences areas (AGCAS editors, 2016). The
technicians perform laboratory tests to come up with precise and reliable data
for support of the scientific investigations. They can work with the
psychologists when doing the experiments where they give insights on the best
and worst behaviors as per the experiment leading to the production of reliable
data that can produce best results and performance. Such involvements will lead
to development and advancement of modern science and medicine.

Food scientists, also, can act as
technical brewers that are in charge of the whole brewing process and beer packaging
(AGCAS editors, 2016). It is their duty to ensure consistency and quality of
the product. As technical brewer, they are also responsible for developing new
recipes and products, introducing different or new methods of brewing. In this
case, food scientists can work with the psychologists to carry out behavioral
experiments once a new product is introduced or a new ingredient is added. The
experiments will lead to the production of more quality drinks that are less
harmful and nutritious to the human body. The psychologists’ research studies
on substance use and abuse will be essential in this juncture (Clas, 2008).

Toxicologists look at the effect of
radiation and toxic substances on the environment, animal and human health
(AGCAS editors, 2016). They plan and carry out field and laboratory studies
that help in identifying, evaluating and monitoring the effects and also
consider using future technology. Also, the toxicologists isolate, identify and
measure radiations or toxic substances and the harmful effect they pose on
humans, ecosystems, plants or animals. Under this field, the food scientists
and psychologists can work together by planning and carrying out a variety of
experiments in the laboratories or fields and thereafter use experimental data to
assess the toxicity of a substance and come up with a safety profile (Clas, 2008). They should balance potential benefits
against any risks together.

            The nutritional therapist works with
people to prevent and alleviate disease and also to promote good health by
giving dietary recommendations (AGCAS editors, 2016). Biochemical and
nutritional imbalances in the body may lead to ill health. They can work with
the psychologists who research on food intake and body weight and come up with
a detailed and the best nutritional diet on a given individual (Bellisle,
Blundell, Dye, Fantino, Fern, Fletcher et al., 1998 pg. 175-176). The research
leads to the achievement of best results required.
